Born into a champagne-making family, Christophe Baron is the oldest son of Baron Albert. The Baron family has been cultivating the land in the Marne Valley of Champagne for centuries. Christophe Baron settled in the Walla Walla Valley AVA, located within Washington state.
A perfect symbiosis between tradition and modernity, the teams have been working the vines in the simplest way possible, with the invaluable help of horses. With a total of five draft horses on the team, Christophe Baron was the first vigneron to successfully plant vines in the story land of the Walla Walla Valley, using biodynamic techniques since 2002 and the use of horses for the cultivation of the vines. The horses are clad in unique farming equipment that is tailor-made by a specialist in Burgundy, France and gait through the closely planted vines with ease and precision. The winery was bestowed a Green Emblem by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate in 2021, making Horsepower Vineyards one of the 38 producers around the world to be included in this list.
Planted with Grenache and Syrah, Horsepower Vineyard reigns over four vineyards: Sur Echalas Vineyard, The Tribe Vineyard, High Contrast Vineyard and Fiddleneck Vineyard. These four vineyards are cultivated using biodynamic practices that is to say, the vines are farmed based on the lunar calendar, and no herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, chemical insecticides or fungicides are used.
