Alongside this illustrious region is the equally fascinating Nahe region, with its wines reaching the highest heights of excellence.
With its lush fields, romantic valleys and fascinating rock formations, the Nahe region paints a picture of Germany's spectacular landscape. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the cultivation of vines in this region started over two millennia ago.
Nahe wines are produced along the eponymous river, in the heart of a region that boasts a diverse geology. The vineyards cover an average of 4,000 hectares on the steep banks of the Nahe River. They benefit from a superb southern exposure that bathes the vineyards in an optimal amount of sunshine. Limestone, slate, volcanic rock, coloured sandstone, clay and quartz all lend their beautiful nuances to Nahe wines.
Indeed, only three grape varieties are mainly used for the production of white wines (Riesling, Müller-Thurgau and Sylvaner). The vines are spread over the entire vineyard and therefore over very diverse geological formations, giving them a typical expression depending on where they are planted.
The same applies to the red wines of Nahe. Even though they are very much in the minority, they still offer fine interpretations of the Dornfelder, Portugieser and Spatburgunder grape varieties.
Nahe wines are thus defined by a myriad of different styles. From fine and spicy, to light and fruity, to powerful and slightly earthy, these German wines promise to appeal to all wine lovers.
