Suntory Whisky traces its origins back to Shinjiro Torii.

Wishing to develop Western-style wines and liqueurs in Japan, he opened a small family shop in Osaka in 1899. The response to these imported wines was mixed. Shinjiro Torii devoted himself to making his own wine and in 1907 launched Akadama Port Wine, a particularly popular wine known today as Akadama Sweet Wine. Buoyed by this success, in 1923 Shinjiro Torii founded the Yamazaki distillery, recognised as the first to create malt whisky in Japan, from which Suntory Shirofuda or Yamazaki, the illustrious benchmark for Japanese whisky, was produced.

The Suntory group went on to expand its activities and achieve international renown. After acquiring Château Lagrange in 1983, Suntory went on to acquire the French Orangina Schweppes Group, the British drinks brands Ribena and Lucozade in 2013, and Beam, a leading spirits brand, in 2014.
