Description
The richness and depth of a uniquely aged Guatemalan rum
The estate
Since 1976, the 100th anniversary of the founding of its eponymous town, the Ron Zacapa estate has established itself as an essential reference among the greatest rum producers across the world. The name Zacapa comes from the Nahuatl (Aztec) language, which means "on the river of grass". Located in the heart of Guatemala, the estate showcases its skills in a very original and unique way through a range of exceptional ron (rum).
Lorena Vásquez, one of the few women cellar masters in the world of spirits, has been masterfully crafting the Zacapa style since 1982, from blending to ageing, to reveal a range of rums with inimitable flavours.
Farming area
The Zacapa distillery looks after a Guatemalan terroir with volcanic soil, rich in minerals and criss-crossed by rivers. This terroir, ideal for growing sugar cane, is unique because of the aromatic depth it gives to the production of these high quality rums.
The rum
Ron Zacapa 23 is to be (re)discovered in a hard wooden box which, like a puzzle, can be dismantled into several pieces and transformed into 6 coasters with designer details. This iconic model at the origin of Ron Zacapa's creation has benefited from a unique blend of rums from 6 to 23 years old.
The bottle has a woven fabric around it, made by Guatemalan women, allowing them to generate income to cope with the various crises the country has experienced. Currently, 700 women weave and give the Zacapa bottle its Guatemalan authenticity.
Distillation and ageing
Ron Zacapa 23 is made using a « solera » ageing process in which rums of different ages and profiles are blended and then aged in a succession of casks. Each barrel has a history and a role in the development of Zacapa rum. The first have been used to preserve American whiskeys, the second have contained sherry and the last have contained Pedro Ximenez wines aged for 21 years in the oak casks of Château Lagrange.
This ageing process takes place at high altitude (2,300 metres). The cool, moist mountain air allows the rum to age gently while developing its unique taste identity.
