Description
A Super Tuscan with Beautifully Integrated Oak
Grattamacco was first founded in 1977 on a hill overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea in the Bolgheri Superiore appellation of Tuscany. The estate's first wine produced in 1982. During the 1970's, Grattamacco - along with other prestigious Super Tuscans, like Sassicaia, revolutionized Tuscan viticulture by blending international grape varieties with Tuscany's flagship Sangiovese. Today, the Grattamacco property includes 14 hectares of vines, grown in three distinct soils (silt and red sandy soil, calcareous flysch and sandy calcareous flysch) and managed according to the principles of organic viticulture. The fruit for Grattamacco's Bolgheri Superiore is manually harvested from a 10-hectare plot at an altitude of 100 meters above sea level, where the vines are 20 years old, on average. The fruit undergoes open must fermentation in cone-shaped fermentation barrels before malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This wine spends 18 months in barrique of one or two previous uses and is then further refined in the bottle for at least 12 months before it is commercially released.
The blend of the Grattamacco 2014 consists of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese. In the glass, this wine displays a dark ruby red color. The nose reveals intense aromas of fruit, along with hints of balsamic and Mediterranean scrubland. The oak is beautifully integrated here, offering a smoky note on the finish. On the palate, this Super Tuscan is quite austere and fresh, with a pleasant tannic structure and nice acidity stretching across a long and persistent finish, peppered by spice. This wine will age very nicely for 12-15 years. A true classic, perfect for any special occasion.
