Description
Precise and complex, a fine Pauillac red wine
The estate
With its vineyard situated on the greatest terroirs of Pauillac, Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse is one of the most beautiful properties in the prestigious appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. Founded in 1675, this 5th Classified Growth is distinguished by its wines, which offer a very precise expression of the Pauillac terroir through tremendous structure and incredible aging potential.
The vineyard
Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse 2021 is a Pauillac wine whose vineyard was patiently assembled by the lawyer Pierre Ducasse in the 18th century. This 40-hectare terroir is spread over three large plots. The vines are 25 years old on average and are planted on gravel and silica soils.
The wine
Since the 2020 vintage, Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse is adorned with a new label that celebrates the 200th harvest. In-depth archival research enabled the teams to determine the date of the estate's creation in 1675, a date which now decorates the top of the label. The estate’s coat of arms, with lighter and more elegant lines, is accompanied by the historical motto "Regis Semper Amici" (Friends forever) portraying the link between two families since the marriage of Pamela Ducasse and Edouard Duroy de Suduiraut in 1822. This innovative graphic design is part of a visionary project by Chateau Grand-Puy Ducasse called "Renaissance". The illustrious Pauillac estate, boasting a 350-year-old history, is in the midst of major restructuring work on its vat room and cellar.
The vintage
The particularly early budding of the vines was favored by a mild, wet winter followed by a summery start to spring. The summer was cool, not very sunny and very rainy.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvest followed by a rigorous sorting. Meticulous selection of batches. Vinification in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.
The blend
Cabernet Sauvignon (68%)
Merlot (32%).
