A fresh and creamy rosé wine from Côtes de Provence
The property
Château d’Esclans is located in the heart of Provence, northeast of Saint-Tropez, with the Mediterranean in the background. The first traces of Château d'Esclans date back to the Roman Empire. It was then an observation post of the Gulf of Fréjus, to prevent possible maritime invasions. Château d’Esclans is an extraordinary estate in the heart of Provence. The Château is known for its old grenache vines producing a grape more concentrated in aromas than young vines.
Built in the 19th century, the current château has had many owners. Owned by Sacha Lichine since 2006, Château d’Esclans has contributed to the rise of Côtes de Provence wines. It has now become a global reference for Provence rosés with the Whispering Angel cuvée. As a trader and winemaker, Caves d’Esclans identifies vineyards, grapes and wines from Château d’Esclans as well as local producers to create what is considered today as the best rosé in the world.
The vineyard
On the Côte d’Azur, a few cables from the ancient Roman city of Fréjus, the valley of Esclans is outlined, housing the 44-hectare vineyard of the eponymous château. Averaging 35 years old, the vines are planted on vineyards composed, depending on the plots, of clays, limestones or even sandy gravels. This mosaic of terroirs then ensures a great diversity of characters to these great Côtes de Provence wines.
Desiring to obtain the best possible quality of grapes and wines, a privileged relationship is maintained with local grape producers, committed alongside Caves d’Esclans, and whose vineyards are maintained with the same quality requirements as those of the vineyards of Château d’Esclans.
Vinification and aging
A know-how combining traditional and modern techniques. After precise selection, the grapes are hand-picked at night and then transported to the cellars. Then, the grapes are sorted by electronic optics, the destemming and crushing are practiced lightly and delicately at 7-8°C to avoid oxidation. The blend is then made with the best free-run and press juices. Finally, fermentation and aging continue in stainless steel tanks whose temperatures are individually controlled to guarantee the quality of Whispering Angel.
Blend
Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Rolle.
